Musical Culture

A traditional drum crafted from a hollowed-out log, commonly used in ceremonial dances and celebrations. It produces deep, resonant sounds that play a crucial role in many local music styles.

a long-necked harp instrument that men use to accompany storytelling and compose songs honouring patrons and members of the royal family. It consists of a long wooden neck that is pushed through a gourd that is covered with a sound box made of leather.

They came from all over the world, bringing with them a variety of languages, abilities, experiences, and cultures. Even in the liberation process, they emerged in music, which has become deeply ingrained in Sierra Leonean culture. It is a blend of all the various sounds, telling their history and expressing our pride as Sierra Leoneans.

In Sierra Leone, music is central to rituals, storytelling, and daily life. Each ethnic group has its own dances and rhythms, like the women-only Bondo dance that shows women’s strength and unity. Traditional sounds still shape modern music, preserving culture while reaching new listeners.
